ปัจจุบันเสียงที่ดังเกินความจําเป็นจนก่อให้เกิดผลเสียต่อสุขภาพอนามัยของคน มาจากแหล่งต่างๆ มากมาย ส่วนสำคัญที่เป็นต้นกำเนิดเสียง ได้แก่ การคมนาคม ทั้งบนถนน บนราง และทางอากาศ โรงงานอุตสาหกรรมที่เกิดจากเครื่องจักร ครัวเรื่อนที่เกิดจากเครื่องมือเครื่องใช้ภายในบ้าน และเสียงจากแหล่งอื่นๆ ซึ่งเรามักเรียกว่ามลพิษทางเสียงนั้นเอง
